God Does Not Legislate

I don’t believe God has ever written a bill or passed a law in the United States. Until he does, I think deferring responsibility to him is shameful and makes one unfit to serve in government.

I almost missed it. If I hadn’t turned the TV on while I was making dinner, I may have missed that there was another mass shooting that left 9 people dead. It’s just so common.

I did turn the TV on, and I watched Congressperson Keith Self give the old song and dance interview. I’m still trying to find the full interview because my disgust broken into clips is less than ideal, but it’s what we have.

As a quick aside, I recognize WordPress may not support the Twitter API in the future. I’ll come back and transcribe if these don’t embed as intended.

When asked what he thought of people who would say “praying is not enough” Self responded, “Those are people who don’t believe in an almighty God, who is absolutely in control of our lives”. 1. You’re right, I don’t. 2. Even if I did, I sure would have an issue with God, being in control of everything, deciding that this is something he should do.

Self goes on to say “I would like to stay away from the politics today because today I’d like to focus on the victims”. I wish I could write that I understood this point of view, but I simply can’t. Politicians continue to say “let’s not focus on politics”. Well, it’s in your job description so I’m going to need you to focus on them a little bit for the safety of your constituents.

This is just one person, but his job is to represent many. Perhaps in this interview he did. Perhaps the voters here are ok with this. I don’t believe God has ever written a bill or passed a law in the United States. Until he does, I think deferring responsibility to him is shameful and makes one unfit to serve in government.

For what it’s worth, a disclaimer. I think it’s totally fine to believe in God. You can pray and practice your religion. I’m not interested in the theological debate. You do your thing. What I’m not fine with is pretending we don’t have any personal responsibility because the religious being of your choosing decides what happens to all of us.
