Not Touching Threads

Meta launched their Twitter competitor today. It’s called Threads. It’s not a thread I’m going to pull on in the short term.

A couple of disclaimers before my rant.

  1. I’ve never launched anything at this scale. What I do know is launching anything is incredibly complicated and it sounds like the Threads rollout has been smooth.
  2. I generally enjoy Instagram and Facebook. I’m seeing way too many ads and would happily pay to not see any. Just noting that my following comments aren’t from a place of anti-meta-ness.

In the year we make contact…2023…how does any service launch without a web experience. If you go to the main Threads site, you get nothing but a QR code. Scan that, and it redirects you to the app store to download.

Why…just why? I know the Instagram web experience isn’t great, and I use plenty of native apps over web apps (you can see Spotify on my taskbar). However if I’m signing up for a service, I’d like to use my computer.

I recognize this is an old-man-yells-at-sky take but I’m fine with that. Web experiences shouldn’t be hidden behind apps. Native apps should be a part of the experience.

Perhaps this is just to ensure a smooth rollout. If that’s the case, I retract my rant.
