What Works For You – Personal Edition

I was inspired by this post from Chris Coyer, What Works From You. There was a line that was remarkable simple but it really struck a chord with me. “That fella’s very honest approach of we do what works for us is a nice sentiment. While perhaps easier said than done, I like how it tosses aside any notion of not measuring up.”

Chris Coyier

I’ve noticed a trend in internet content. This whole thing on filming one’s day, morning, workout, whatever. It’s all clearly putting out the vibe of “you should do this” which is silly in my opinion. So while I’m listing some stuff that works for me, it’s just that, works for me.

Run-Walking

For years, I have felt really bad about my inability to run like I used to. However, with Dani wanting to smell and pee on everything while we are out, we have to stop and walk so run-walking, works for me. Works for us I suppose because Dani seems to like it.

Working From Home

Working from home, works for me. I think working from home is not for everybody. I also think some folks are probably afraid to say it doesn’t work for them, at least not all the time. However, it works for me. I’m really good at setting up what I need to do and then going and doing the thing. I don’t feel the need to be around other folks. I like (and prefer) communicating via email. I have no problem staying at the apartment all day with Dani. I don’t know, just works for me.

Working Early

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been an early bird. Everywhere I’ve ever worked has been welcoming to me starting my days a little earlier. I try not to send emails or chats before most people arrive but getting a solid 90 minutes to 2 hours to dig into work before the work day traditionally starts has always been a win for me.

Diablo IV

I’ve had a bit of a weird spell with games lately. I love Destiny 2 but sometimes I don’t always feel like playing it. I don’t really want to play any other FPS so I’ve just been kinda floating along with my game choices. I picked up Diablo IV this week and while I’m not super deep into it, I can see it as a fun game to bounce to when I don’t feel like shooting aliens.

Web Dev

I have a few things in web dev land that work for me. 1. I like to work on Windows. I’ve actually adopted more of the iOS mobile ecosystem but for actual computer stuff, I prefer Windows. 2. I like React and Vue (more Vue) but I will always try to do something with regular JavaScript first. Just feels more natural. 3. WordPress. I know not everyone likes WordPress. But I don’t mind writing PHP templates. I kinda like it. Obviously doesn’t work for every site but 20 years later, I still like WordPress as a platform.

These are some things that just work for me. I’m certainly not advocating for using WordPress for everything or waking up early, just because I do it. Lean in to what works best for you.
